ANLAN Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber Review

I’ve previously talked about ultrasonic spatulas on my blog so you may already know that I find these devices particularly useful for extracting stubborn sebum that’s hardened inside the pore.

This time around, I was contacted by ANLAN to do a review on their bestseller – an Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber. I happily accepted their offer and after testing the device a few times over a couple of week’s time, I am ready to share my opinions on it.

This is my ANLAN Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber review, so let’s start with the most important thing:

What Is The Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber?

The Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber is a beauty tool that looks like a spatula and is intended to be used as an exfoliator to help extract blackheads, gunk, and sebum out of your pores.

Additionally, the device can also be used to help your skin better absorb skincare products and it also helps give a temporary lifting effect due to the way it’s being used.

The facial spatula is a lightweight device that’s easy to hold and handle, which is something a beginner would appreciate.

How Does The Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber Work?
The Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber produces up to 24,000 ultrasonic vibrations per second that help to “shake up” the pore, loosen the debris that’s stuck inside and help scoop it out with the spatula.
This is a form of deep cleansing, exfoliating, and extracting packed in the same device and the best thing about it is that is totally painless.

How to Use The Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber?
ANLAN Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber has four modes, and here is what all of them mean:

Ultrasonic mode
This is the standard mode that emits ultrasonic vibrations to help “shake up” the pore and loosen the sebum stuck inside so that you can extract it easier.

When using the skin scrubber on ultrasonic mode, you need to place the spatula blade on the skin at a 30° angle, apply gentle but constant pressure, and slowly move it on areas that need to be extracted.

It’s best that you also keep the skin damp or use a medium (gel, cream, or mask) of your choice as to avoid discomfort, scratching, pinching, and skin damage.

EMS mode

The Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber produces up to 24,000 ultrasonic vibrations per second that help to “shake up” the pore, loosen the debris that’s stuck inside and help scoop it out with the spatula.
The EMS is a gentle microcurrent mode that sends a mild electric signal into the muscle to help tone and tighten it.

I already talked about microcurrent devices here on my blog and while this is a much milder option than what I am personally used to, a beginner will probably appreciate it much more.

Apply a medium that glides easily (gel or oil)
1>Turn on your device and press the button twice to use the EMS mode
2>Hold the device so that the pronged tabs and buttons face away from your skin
3>Hold the spatula flush to your skin and glide it from the center of your face toward the perimeter in an upward motion. Repeat glides 2-3 per section
4>You can use the Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber on EMS mode daily to help lift the face temporarily.

Ion (+) mode and Ion (-) mode
This stands for iontophoresis, which is a technique of introducing ionic medicinal compounds into the body through the skin by applying a local electric current.

It is used to help products penetrate better into the skin. The vibrations of the device can actually push products 3-5 millimeters into the skin, drastically increasing absorption.

Apply your toner, serum, facial oil, eye cream, and/or moisturizer
Turn on your device, press the button three times to use the Ion (+) and four times to use the Ion (-)
Hold the device so that the pronged tabs and buttons face away from your skin
Hold the spatula flush to your skin, gliding it from the center of your face toward the perimeter in an upward motion. Repeat glides up to five times per section
You can use your spatula on ION Mode daily if desired.

Method 1
Cleanse

When using any beauty device, you need to make sure that you have a clean canvas to work on, therefore, gently remove all makeup and cleanse your skin before starting your treatment.

Apply an enzymatic mask

An enzymatic peel mask is a lighter version of an acid mask that uses alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids that will intensify the exfoliation and leave your skin baby soft.

I typically like to apply an enzymatic mask and keep it on for 10-15 minutes (you can do it less if it starts to tingle or sting).

These are the two I like:

PRIORI – Enzyme Peel Masque
Elemis – Papaya Enzyme Peel
Scrub the mask away on Ultrasonic mode

Once you want to remove the mask, switch the device on Ultrasonic mode, and use the prongs of the device to gently glide across the skin.

When you have too much of the product gathered on the prongs, use a cotton pad or a tissue to remove it and continue with the rest of the face. Avoid wetting the device.

Continue to gently glide the device over the curves of our nose, manipulating your nose with the opposite hand to make easier access.

Use one prong of the device to glide up the edge of the nostril and get those hard to reach pores. Always remember to move slowly, even if you are passing a few times per area.
If your skin starts to hurt or it becomes overly flushed and uncomfortable, it’s best that you stop for now and remove the rest of the product with water.

Method 2
Cleanse

Use a gentle cleanser to remove makeup and always follow it up with a second cleanse to make sure you don’t have any residue left on the skin.

Apply a medium

A medium can be any skincare product that you are usually using because you don’t have to remove it once you’re done with the treatment.

This could be a serum, gel, moisturizer, eye cream, etc.

Massage the skin on EMS mode

Gently massage the skin on EMS mode to tone the muscles and create a temporary lifting effect.

Method 3
Cleanse

Cleanse your face with lukewarm water and make sure there is no makeup residue or dirt left on the surface of your skin before starting your treatment.

Apply a damp and warm compress

Once you’ve cleansed, apply a damp and warm compress on the face (a towel or a smaller cloth) so that you can soften the sebum accumulated inside the pores and extract it easier.

You can keep the damp towel on your face for about 10 minutes, just make sure it stays warm while it’s on you.

This is not something I recommend doing if you are claustrophobic, but if you decide to go with it, make sure that you leave your mouth and nose uncovered so that you can breathe.

Deep clean the skin on Ion (+) mode

Once the skin is softened, switch the device on Ion (+) and gently glide the prongs on the skin, starting with areas that have the most accumulated sebum so that you can make the most out of your treatment before it hardens again.

While doing this, always make sure the skin remains damp so that you can glide easily without accidentally pinching or pulling on it.

Method 4
Steam
After thoroughly cleansing the skin, switch on your steamer, and steam your face for 5-10 minutes. Keep a good distance between you and your steamer because sometimes hot water can spray out of it and can burn you.

Closer proximity also increases your chances of dehydrating your skin, therefore, steaming isn’t something that needs to be done daily or even weekly. Once a month is enough.

Apply a medium

Once you’ve steamed your skin, apply your usual skincare products as a medium because you will not need to remove them after this treatment.

Massage the product into the skin on Ion (-) mode

Switch the device on Ion (-) mode and gently massage your face to help warm up the area. This will allow for better product absorption as well as a therapeutic feeling of well-being.

What Comes Inside The Box?

Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber Precautions
Using the Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber isn’t recommendable for just about anyone and as any other beauty device or skincare product, it has its own contraindications.

One important thing I want to point out is that you cannot use the Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber over active acne because this will inevitably lead to irritation, redness, and, depending on the severity of your acne, even bleeding, oozing, and overall extreme discomfort.

Instead of using a skin spatula to extract and exfoliate, you are probably a better candidate for a chemical peel.

Additionally, avoid using the Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber if any of the following applies to you:

You are pregnant or breastfeeding
You have a condition called Bell’s palsy or commonly known as facial paralysis
You have electronic devices implanted (i.e ICD or pacemaker)
You are undergoing chemotherapy
You carry ECG (electrocardiograph) or other fixed medical electronic machinery
Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber Pros:
Affordable ($38)
Strong vibrations
Feels pleasant on the skin
A variety of different modes that offer different functions (extracting blackheads, massaging products into the skin, microcurrent)
Sharp edges for easy and efficient extracting
Curved in the middle to access difficult-to-reach areas like the sides of the nose with ease
Lightweight and easy to handle
Comes in different colors
Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber Cons:
Doesn’t offer a customizable intensity option
Sharp edges (although effective) need to be manipulated with great caution

Related Questions

How often can I use an ultrasonic skin scrubber?
Depending on the mode you choose, you can use an ultrasonic skin scrubber daily or weekly.

You can use the microcurrent or Ion (-) mode to help tone the muscles and allow better product absorption daily. On the other hand, you can use ultrasonic mode for scooping sebum out of the pores once a week or once every two weeks.
